How It Works
Freezers are never 100% usable -- walls, coils, shelves, and door clearance reduce actual storage space. Chest freezers are the most space-efficient but hardest to organize. This calculator estimates real-world container capacity and helps plan meal prep batches.
The Formula
Usable Space = Rated cu ft x Usability Factor. Max Containers = floor(Usable Space / 0.035). Lbs Capacity = Usable x 35.
Variables
Usability factors: Chest 75%, Upright 70%, Top-mount 65%, Side-by-side 55%. Container size: 32 oz (0.035 cu ft).
Example
A 5 cu ft top-mount freezer: 3.25 cu ft usable = ~92 meal containers. 20 servings uses only 22% of capacity.
Tips
- Freeze soups and sauces flat in zip bags, then store vertically like files for easy access.
- Label every container with the dish name and date frozen using masking tape and a marker.
- Most cooked meals last 2-3 months frozen. Raw meat lasts 4-12 months depending on type.
- Leave 1 inch of headspace in containers -- liquids expand when frozen.
- Do a monthly freezer inventory to use older items first and avoid waste.
