How It Works
Nutrition labels are based on per-serving values. Daily values (DV%) are based on a 2,000 calorie reference diet as set by the FDA. Protein provides 4 calories per gram, carbohydrates provide 4 calories per gram, and fat provides 9 calories per gram.
The Formula
Per Serving = Total / Servings. DV% = (PerServing / DailyReference) x 100. Calories from protein = g x 4, from carbs = g x 4, from fat = g x 9.
Variables
DV references: 2,000 cal, 50g protein, 275g carbs, 78g fat (FDA 2020 standards).
Example
A recipe with 2,400 total calories and 8 servings: 300 cal/serving = 15% DV. If 10g protein per serving = 20% DV.
Tips
- 5% DV or less is considered low for a nutrient; 20% DV or more is considered high.
- The 2,000 calorie reference may not match your personal needs -- adjust based on age, sex, and activity level.
- Fiber is a carbohydrate but is not digested, so it contributes minimal calories.
- When comparing products, always check the serving size first -- it varies widely between brands.
- Protein and fiber help you feel full longer; prioritize these in meals to manage hunger.
